ROCKIN' IN

| For those that need a little "Ides" fix for the winter, I would like to report on their most recent concert at the historic Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. As part of the contingent from the Chicago area, I am proud to say we are now known as the Chicago 4. The Chicago 4 is comprised of Marlene O'Malley, Kathy Thompson and John and myself (Annette) Moore. We arrived on separate flights and met at the hotel just as the band was leaving for their sound check. They seemed happy to see familiar Midwest faces in the rainy New England town. |
| After dinner at Chan's, an interesting local Chinese restaurant with a Jazz cafe, we walked around the corner to the Stadium Theatre. As a fan of organ music and old theaters I was looking forward to the chance to see this venue. Scott May was hoping to play the Wurlitzer theatre organ that dates back to 1929 and the theatre manager was happy to show it to us. However, it was not in playable condition due to further maintenance and restoration needed on the pipes. The organ itself is so beautiful and is a tribute to the organization that has supported the restoration. | ![]() |
| One of
the ways the Stadium Theatre Foundation raised money was by 'selling'
seats. There were engraved gold metal plates on the back of the
red velvet seats with the names of donors. The ceiling was very
ornate with gold leaf and carefully restored frescos. The
all-volunteer crew of ushers was pleasant and welcoming and dressed to
reflect the fine surroundings. The acoustics were good though not
as good as Chicago Symphony Center. The opening band was a local group called "Powerhouse" that was comprised of a lead singer, lead guitar, bass, keyboard and drummer. They played mostly original blues and had a loyal following of fans that unfortunately did not stay for the main event. They missed out on a great Ides of March performance. Jim was worried about his voice as his throat was hurting during rehearsal but being the showman that he is, he came out and gave it his all. They ran through their usual set and told the now familiar stories to a new crowd with the same energy as if they were doing it for the first time. The "Babushka Brass" was in great form and really looked like they were having fun up there. The Chicago 4 left their Midwest inhibitions behind and got up to dance for the "V" song and the encore, "All Join Hands." A very good time was had by all and we rebooked our flights to get out of Dodge before the predicted "Nor-easter" hit. There is no place like sweet home Chicago! |
